What it is like to live here

East Legon grew from a quiet residential extension into Accra's most recognisable affluent suburb. The street pattern is generous by Accra standards, plots are large, and much of the housing stock is purpose-built detached family housing rather than converted or subdivided.

The area supports itself: supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics, restaurants and fitness facilities are all within the neighbourhood, which is not true of every part of the city.

Housing stock

Predominantly four- and five-bedroom detached houses on their own plots, most with gardens, staff quarters and walled compounds. Apartment supply has grown significantly, concentrated in newer blocks aimed at professionals and smaller households.

Serviced and gated schemes are increasingly common, which appeals to buyers who want reliable water, power backup and managed security without arranging each themselves.

Schools and amenities

The main reason families move here. East Legon and its immediate surroundings hold the highest concentration of international and private schools in Ghana, which materially shortens the school run for families who would otherwise cross the city twice a day.

Getting around

Access to the airport and to central Accra is good outside peak hours. The main arteries slow considerably at school-run and commuting times, and this is the single most common complaint from residents.

Who it suits

Families with school-age children, returning diaspora buyers who want an established area, and professionals who value being able to walk to amenities. Buyers optimising purely for value per cedi generally do better in Spintex or Adenta.
